Falbygdens Ost
Arla-owned cheese maker in Falköping specialising in long-aged hard cheese.
Falbygdens was founded in 1878 as a small dairy in Borgunda, on the Västgöta plains, and relocated to Falköping in the 1920s. The company initially produced household cheese, butter, and curds for local markets. During the Second World War, the founder Folke Andersson adapted production to make whey cheese (mesost) to circumvent rationing restrictions, earning a diploma at the Skara cheese fair in 1943. After the war, the business expanded with retail locations across Sweden and developed its signature product, whisky-infused cheddar, created when Andersson experimented with syringes at his kitchen table. Beginning in the 1960s, Falbygdens imported selected cheese specialities from France, broadening its range beyond domestically produced varieties. The company owned and operated Falbygdens Osteria in Falköping, which attracted approximately 220,000 visitors annually. After changing ownership several times through the 1990s and early 2000s, Arla Foods acquired Falbygdens in 2015. Today the brand offers Swedish long-aged hard cheeses (Herrgård, Präst, Grevé), imported cheeses from across Europe (Comté, Gruyère, Manchego, Gorgonzola, Roquefort, Brie, Camembert), soft cheeses including goat cheese and fresh varieties, smoked and processed cheeses, and accessory products such as preserves and crackers for cheese boards.
