INIAV (Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária, I.P.) is Portugal's national state laboratory for agricultural and veterinary research, based in Oeiras. The institute conducts research and testing across seven main intervention areas: environment and natural resources, agrarian systems, plant health, forest systems, animal health, food safety, and market/consumer topics. It operates multiple research poles and offers ISO 17025-accredited laboratory services in animal health, animal genetics, animal nutrition, food security, agro-food and forestry industry, plant health, soil and plant nutrition, viticulture and oenology, and forest systems. INIAV maintains reference laboratories and operates collaborative labs and competency centres. The institute conducts applied research through multiple R&D projects in crop improvement, animal production, wine science, and food technology. It also manages national germplasm banks and seed collections. The laboratory division includes capabilities in food science testing and serves agricultural and food producers throughout Portugal.
