Alginor ASA

Marine biorefinery focused on Laminaria hyperborea. Develops kelp-derived ingredients for pharma, nutraceutical, food and cosmetic markets via the AORTA process. Vertically integrated.

Alginor ASA is vertically integrated along the entire value chain, from kelp harvesting along the Norwegian coast through biorefining to finished product. The company aims to produce pharmaceutical ingredients in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), with nutraceutical ingredients meeting food-grade standards. Its proprietary biorefining technologies focus on total biomass utilisation and the elimination of formaldehyde throughout the production process, employing separation, mild and green chemistry methods to extract multiple valuable substances from a single raw material source.

The company works with *Laminaria hyperborea*, an Atlantic kelp species with an estimated global biomass of 100 million tonnes, approximately 60% of which is located in Norwegian waters. Alginor holds access to regulated harvesting parcels containing an estimated 35 million tonnes, with an average annual harvest availability of 4–7 million tonnes, and targets long-term harvesting of 100,000 tonnes annually. This raw material and the company's extraction capabilities support production of ingredients across medical, personal care, and health and nutrition sectors.

Alginor operates with a network of research and development partners including NTNU, the University of Bergen, KTH, RISE PFI, and Borregaard (a major shareholder). The company has received funding through the EU's Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe framework programmes. It maintains full traceability across its supply chain from harvest through production and emphasises sustainable biomass utilisation and minimal environmental impact.
