Founded in 1950 by Konstantinos Hatzakos and now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Mevgal is based in Koufalia near Thessaloniki. The company began with milk collection and cheese production (feta and yellow cheeses), moving to dedicated facilities in 1967. In 1971 it pioneered pasteurised milk in plastic bottles, followed by European-style yoghurt production in 1978. From 1985 the company developed an export business and is reportedly responsible for approximately one in five yoghurts exported from Greece. The company holds ISO quality certification as the first Greek dairy manufacturer to achieve it (1998). Recent investments include an ultra-clean yoghurt production line with ISO 8 clean room specifications (2018), a natural gas installation for cleaner energy (2020), and modernisation and expansion of the cheese production facility completed in 2024, which the company describes as among the most advanced dairies in the Balkans. Product lines include fresh and long-life milk, traditional and strained yoghurt, feta with protected designation of origin, yellow and whey cheeses, grated cheeses, drinking yoghurts, puddings and jellies. The company also manufactures a group of related companies including Evrogal and operations in Bulgaria and Macedonia.
