TANN is SPAR's in-house meat producer, founded in 1963 and established as one of Austria's largest meat and sausage manufacturers. It operates six production facilities in Austria (Dornbirn, Wörgl, Marchtrenk, St. Pölten, Graz, and Föderlach), plus additional facilities in Italy and Hungary. All beef, veal, and pork processed by TANN is sourced from Austria and bears the AMA-Gütesiegel (quality seal) certification, which requires animals to be born, raised, slaughtered, and processed entirely within Austria. Since 1994, TANN has held AMA certification; it gained ISO 22000 certification in 2011, covering production and all suppliers including spice and packaging manufacturers.
TANN produces fresh meat in both service counter and self-service formats, including steaks, sausages, ham, and charcuterie. Speciality product lines include vacuum-sealed cuts, dry-aged beef, Sous Vide preparations, and poultry products. Since 2023, TANN manufactures plant-based meat alternatives for the SPAR Veggie line at facilities in St. Pölten and Wernberg, using pea and soy protein. The company also produces organic meat products for the SPAR Natur*pur line from certified Austrian organic farms. TANN has developed 23 branded meat programs in collaboration with Austrian farmers, such as Ländle Rind (Vorarlberg), Tiroler Almrind, and Vulkanland Duroc Schwein (Styria).
The company employs approximately 2,900 people and distributes exclusively to SPAR, EUROSPAR, and INTERSPAR supermarkets. TANN has implemented plastic reduction measures, including optimised self-service packaging that reduced plastic thickness by one-third, cardboard-based packaging for Bio products saving 70 percent plastic, and over 406,000 reusable transport containers for distribution across Austria.
