Grande Porto, SA was founded in February 1981 by Mário Gonçalves with the goal of producing artisanal chili sauce from local agricultural products in Gondomar, Portugal. From these humble beginnings, the company expanded its product portfolio to include confectionery items such as chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, birthday candles, and decorative elements. The company was pioneering in bringing such products to commercial retail channels, previously available only to pastry shops and confectionery factories under the "Nutry" brand.

The company has diversified into three major business areas: Food and disposables, Wines and water, and Home articles. Notable achievements include being the first to market packaged lamprey with Alvarinho wine. In 2000, Grande Porto expanded into wine production and commercialization, establishing partnerships with local quintas and developing several wine brands including Messala (award-winning Alvarinho), Montes de Lá, Serras de Lá, Encostas de Lá, and Desfiado from regions across Portugal.

Quality and food safety form the foundation of Grande Porto's operations. The company maintains ISO 9001:2018 certification for food product commerce, distribution, repackaging, and confectionery production. The organization implements comprehensive food safety management systems and emphasizes continuous improvement, worker safety, and supplier partnerships.
