Henndorf am Wallersee, Austria

Gebrueder Woerle

Henndorf cheese producer (sliced, processed) supplying private label across Europe.

Gebrüder Woerle (Privatkäserei WOERLE) is a family-owned cheese manufacturer based in Henndorf am Wallersee in Austria's Salzburg region, where it has operated for five generations since 1889. The company specializes in hay milk cheese (Heumilch), a protected production standard where cows are fed sun-dried hay rather than silage. WOERLE produces a range of cheese varieties including Emmentaler, Mondseer, and blended/processed cheeses, available in formats ranging from whole wheels to sliced and packaged portions. The dairy sources milk exclusively from approximately 500 farms within a defined radius (maximum 50 km) in the Salzburg Flachgau and Mondseeland regions, regions designated as Austria's largest hay milk production area.

The company operates modern production and ripening facilities at its headquarters site in Henndorf, which underwent significant expansion between 2015 and 2019. Capacity improvements included a new ripening cellar that doubled aging capability, a high-bay refrigerated warehouse for raw and finished goods, a melting works expansion, and slicing and packaging lines. The company holds EU organic certifications for certain product lines and maintains extensive quality controls, including internal laboratory analysis and third-party testing. All production meets strict food safety and hygiene standards, with full traceability from farm to consumer. WOERLE has recently won international recognition, earning six medals (two silver, four bronze) at the 2025–2026 World Cheese Awards and holding silver-medal status in the EcoVadis corporate sustainability ranking, placing it among the top 15 percent of rated companies.

Beyond production, WOERLE operates flagship sustainability initiatives. The "Artenvielfalt in Bauernhand" (Biodiversity in Farmers' Hands) programme, launched in 2019 with partner farms, aims to establish 1,000 conservation areas on farmland by 2030 to support wild plant and insect species. A second pillar, "Regional CO2 reduziert" (Regional CO2 Reduced), tracks and supports on-farm emissions reduction and compensation. The company offers apprenticeship training in eight vocations including dairy technology, food production, mechatronics, and office management, creating approximately 20–25 new positions during recent expansions.
