Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF)
Open-access precision and biomass fermentation upscaling facility (1,000 L and 10,000 L GEA-supplied systems) at NIZO's Food Innovation Campus, bridging the missing middle between lab proof and first commercial production. Pilot operations 2027.
NIZO is a private and independent contract research organisation headquartered in the Food Valley region of Ede, the Netherlands, employing over 100 scientists and support staff. The company works with customers on product reformulation and innovation, bringing together expertise in protein technology, fermentation, bioinformatics, health, food processing, food safety and sensory experiences. NIZO operates Europe's largest third-party pilot plant, which is suitable for food-grade processes and enables clients to solve manufacturing challenges in laboratory settings before implementation at scale. The facility allows science-based solutions to be quickly verified and implemented in existing production processes, reducing time, energy and costs for innovation projects.
